Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prolotherapy is a treatment option for individuals suffering from temporomandibular joint disorders, which can cause pain and dysfunction in the joint and surrounding muscles with previous history of unsuccessful conservative treatments. Prolotherapy is a regenerative injection therapy that involves injecting a solution, typically containing dextrose or other irritants, into the affected ligaments and tendons to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. The injections are targeted at the ligaments and tendons supporting the temporomandibular joint to strengthen and stabilize the joint, reduce pain, and improve function.
Prolotherapy is believed to work by triggering a controlled inflammatory response in the targeted area, which stimulates the production of collagen and other healing factors to strengthen the ligaments and tendons. By strengthening these structures, prolotherapy aims to address the underlying cause of TMJ disorders and provide long-lasting relief from symptoms.
The injected solution, in this case, consisted of one part of dextrose (1 ml), one part of normal saline (1 ml), and two parts of 2% lidocaine (2 ml).
1 ml of the previous solution was deposited after aspiration in each of the following points:
A: Over the ala tragal line, approximately 5 mm away from the middle margin of the tragus.
B: The anterior disc attachment (the slight depression point anterior to the condyle when the condyle glides back into the fossa during the closing of the mouth).
C: The most tender area of masseter muscles.
