Every year, we have a number of these gorgeous little beings come in to us for various reasons.

This little Southern African Hedghog (Atelerix frontalis), is one of nine that are about to be released in a safe area where we hope they will not encounter any further problems.

As with so many species, our indigenous hedgehogs are being hugely impacted by the myriad of threats that accompany urban sprawl and agricultural usage.

Threats range from predation by domestic pets, poison, insufficient food due to restricted movement, electrocution on fences and they are often killed on our roads.
Further afield, they are also killed by fires, farming equipment and the prolific use of pesticides.

Our indigenous hedgehogs are also frequently picked up and killed for food and medicine, harvest for the pet trade or kept in captivity, (well at least until the novelty wears off or they are forgotten and may just gradually starve to death).

Hedgehogs pose no threat to humans, but humans are the single biggest threat to Hedgehogs.
They are actually, very beneficial to humans through eating some of the pests that damage crops or simple veggie patches.

Their numbers are in sharp decline and they are now listed as Threatened or Protected species.. all thanks to humans.
In the meantime, we do what we can for them,and go the extra mile (or 100) to move these as far from humans as possible.
