Robert's Dyslexia Story is a Dyslexia Success Story because one school district was willing to step up and conquer his learning disability.

Robert was adopted from foster care seven years ago. When he was in elementary school in California, the school refused to provide the support he needed to learn to read. His learning disability was not labeled Dyslexia because, if they admitted he had Dyslexia, they would have to pay for staff to receive specialized training.

However, this is a dyslexia success story because we moved to Ohio. Our school Intervention Specialist had the resources she needed and she worked tirelessly to teach Robert how to read. This dyslexia story (the story in Ohio, not the part in California) should be the experience of every child with a learning disability.

All that said, Robert's story of dyslexia was compounded by the fact that he was in foster care and then experienced adoption from foster care. All of the emotional turmoil of being a foster child in foster care mixed with the self-esteem issues related to being in foster care altered Robert's willingness to believe in himself. Thank goodness our intervention specialist in Ohio saw past the kids from hard places in her care to the potential each child with a learning disability had. She fostered hope in my adopted child.
