The largest gathering of First Nations leaders and provincial government representatives in Canada got underway Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016. The gathering is about fostering relationships, addressing problems, creating solutions and celebrating successes. Premier Christy Clark announced support for three significant partnerships with First Nations and Aboriginal organizations –

$250,000 this year will support the work of the Moose Hide Campaign, a growing movement of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men dedicated to ending violence against women and girls;
the Province is committing $2 million to the Royal BC Museum to support all interested Aboriginal peoples in British Columbia seeking the return of their ancestral remains and belongings of cultural significance; and,
the Province and First Nations Health Council will be working with First Nations throughout British Columbia to find new, practical approaches to improving First Nations people’s health and wellness.

This year, Government of Canada representatives Minister of Transport Marc Garneau and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Jody Wilson-Raybould joined Premier Clark, the BC Cabinet and leaders from 203 First Nations communities. The Attorney General spoke about how the work needed at the federal level to proceed with adopting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in a way that translates into real change for its aboriginal citizens.
