STORYLINE

Suspected Maoist rebels shot dead the chief of Nepal's Armed Police Force and two others on Sunday.

Officials said the three victims appeared to have died instantly after being shot at close range.

The rebels, who claim to be inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, began a violent campaign in 1996 to abolish Nepal's constitutional monarchy and establish a socialist state in this Himalayan kingdom.

Krishna Mohan Shrestha, his wife and a bodyguard were killed while walking near their home in the suburbs of Katmandu.

I heard a shot and I didn't pay much attention .Then I heard another shot says this man. Then I went to the murder scene and saw two bodies there. The woman was lying face-down. They were lying very close together and there was a third body, about 5 feet behind.
