They say Stalin was caught off guard by the war. But how do you win a world war by accident?
From the USSR’s creation in 1922, capitalist powers planned intervention. In 1931 Joseph Stalin wrote: “We are fifty or a hundred years behind the advanced countries. We must make good this distance in ten years. Either we do it, or we shall go under.”
The USSR had to rapidly reorganize society to build an industrial power. The result? During the first Five-Year Plan, heavy industry grew 2.7 times. Industrial productivity rose 41% in the first plan and 82% in the second. This resulted in 100,000 tanks produced in WWII.
Additionally, Stalin purged unreliable elements from the Party and military. Declassified information confirms the existence of underground plots against the CPSU. Marshal Tukhachevsky confessed to treason in Prague in 1936 and was later charged accordingly.
Ultimately, it was the unity and cooperation of workers and peasants that prepared the nation for war. Thanks to Stalin and the communists, the USSR liberated Europe, showing the might of socialism for all generations.
