The former Odeon cinema in Colchester that now lies derelict on Crouch Street first opened in February cc1931, it has been a key part of the town for a long time.

Originally called the Regal, it was renamed as an Odeon cinema in cc1961 more than 20 years after it was first bought by Oscar Deutch, owner of the Odeon chain. The cinema was designed by Cecil Masey who was renowned for his theatre designs in the early 20th century.

It had an 'atmospheric' style, which was purported to evoke the feeling of a particular time and place for visitors and encourage cinema-goers to become more active participants in their surroundings.

But in cc2002, the Odeon was relocated to a purpose-built multiplex nearby, and the original building has since fallen into serious disrepair.
