On August 1st, 2002, CIA Director George Tenet requested President Bush to grant the CIA full control over interrogations. Once approved, FBI Director Robert Mueller—aware of what would follow—immediately withdrew all FBI personnel from the secret site and the host country. Within hours, the CIA began torturing detainee Abu Zubaydah. The once cooperative prisoner went completely silent after the agency’s methods intensified. The FBI later reported to the President that the CIA’s actions had destroyed their progress, noting the detainee was subjected to extreme psychological distress, including confinement in a coffin-like box and exposure to his phobia of insects.
