Biographical information on Illumishade from The Metal Observer (http://www.metal-observer.com/3.o/rev...

I think it was around the beginning of the year that I started seeing teasers and announcements mentioning “News of Unknown Forces”. Some sound snippets easily caught my attention and since then, anticipation just kept brewing. Illumishade is the new side project of Eluveitie vocalist Fabienne Erni and guitarist Jonas Wolf. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of Eluveite or folk metal in general, I’ve been growing increasingly keen on the band especially since they released their latest album Ategnatos that came out last year, which I have to admit was a masterful offering of folk and death metal alike. However, Illumishade holds something entirely different in store that I think nobody was ready for. With “ECLYPTIC: Wake of Shadows”, our fellow folk-metallers have surrounded themselves with equally talented musicians and managed to bring together the most unique mixture of metal sub-genres and influences outside the metal world, piecing them all together in just over 40 minutes without cramming or forcing anything to go places where it doesn’t belong. And therein lies what is probably the only fault I can find with this album. It’s just too short. But you can always hit repeat.

Once you play the opening track, a ritual is on display. The listener is greeted with a superb choir reciting words alike a mantra that opens new dimensions for the story to unfold. And this story-like narrative component becomes a dominant feature throughout the entire record. Musically, it might just be the most diverse record I’ve heard this year considering just how many different genres and directions it reaches. I’m gonna start with the metal element just to lay the groundwork. As soon as I heard the first single “World’s End”, I was instantly hooked by the riff style and guitar effects. It sounds like djent, but it’s not djent. The sliced, electronic and highly processed riff effect strongly reminded me of Periphery’s sound signature but unlike the progressive djent masters, the guitar sound in this one also carries a slightly organic touch and a nice weight to it that also resembles Dream Theater.
