RCC Columns Curing – Step-by-Step Guide

Curing is one of the most important steps after concreting RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) columns. It ensures proper strength, durability, and crack resistance.

• To keep the concrete moist and allow cement to hydrate properly.
• To prevent cracks due to rapid drying.
• To achieve maximum strength and durability of the column.

2. When to Start Curing
• Start curing after 24 hours of column concreting (once the concrete sets properly).
• Avoid disturbing the formwork too early — begin curing immediately after removing shuttering if water curing on formwork isn’t possible.

3. Methods of Curing Columns

A. Gunny Bag (Hessian Cloth) Curing
1. Wrap wet gunny bags or jute cloth around the column surface.
2. Keep the cloth constantly moist by sprinkling water periodically.
3. This is the most common and effective method for vertical surfaces.

B. Continuous Water Sprinkling
1. Install a PVC pipe or hose with small holes to sprinkle water continuously.
2. Keep the column surface wet at all times.

C. Ponding at the Base
• For the column pedestal or footing top, create a small pond of water to maintain moisture.

• At least 7 days for OPC cement (Ordinary Portland Cement).
• 10–14 days for blended cements (PPC, PSC, etc.).
• In hot weather, extend curing to 14 days minimum.
