Today we laid Fr. John Doherty, Melmount to rest.
He was an wonderful man and for a time our Parish Priest here in the Murlog Parish, Lifford in 1987.
I first got to know of Fr. John from the 1960’s when my oldest brother John R.I.P. got to know him when he
was a young priest in Clonmany, as at the time John was teaching handloom weaving in Clonmany.
Fr. John was a friend of his and he took him to see his father “Wee” Willie Doherty who was a very, very funny comedian in Derry city. John was so impressed that he wanted to get him to perform in Ardara and ultimately he
did perform there in a famous show with singing superstar Bridie Gallagher (The Girl from Donegal).
I posted this short video of Fr. John performing at the late Mrs. Eleanor Clarke’s 100 Birthday party in the Inter County Hotel, Lifford in 1987 and a snippet from Canon Deegan’s Golden Jubilee celebration in The Parting Glass, Raphoe in the same year.
Fr. John had a music degree and for a time he was also musical director of our Murlog choir when parish priest here. He was a very gentle, humble, and hardworking priest and will be very much missed.
