This lecture starts by explaining how the external intercostal and diaphragm muscles initiate inspiration. It then discusses how intrapleural pressure decreases allowing for the lungs to expand resulting in intra-alveolar pressure decreasing below atmospheric pressure so that air can move from the atmosphere into the lungs. Next it discusses how the external intercostal and diaphragm muscles relax to initiate expiration which allows for intrapleural pressure to increase which causes the lungs to recoil and results in intra-alveolar pressure increasing above atmospheric pressure so that air can leave the lungs.
