Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested on May 9, 2025, at the Delaney Hall Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Newark, New Jersey. Baraka, who is also a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, was accompanying three members of Congress—Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, LaMonica McIver, and Rob Menendez Jr.—on an oversight visit to the facility. Federal authorities allege that Baraka trespassed and ignored multiple warnings to leave the premises. Baraka contends he was on public property and that his arrest was unwarranted. The incident has sparked a broader debate over ICE's enforcement tactics and the reopening of privately operated detention centers, which may actually be illegal in NJ. But we all know how well laws that Trump doesn't personally like have been enforced recently.
