Welcome! I wanted to introduce your first assignment. Let’s call it a throwdown—this assignment will be something we can all use, we will compile into a collective piece of information on climate data. It is also an icebreaker.

There are a lot of numbers clunking around out there for climate change. Okay, if I'm scaring you with all this number talk, just bear with me.

The throwdown is to Create a slide that shows any climate numbers you find interesting, and put them in context. Here is the icebreaker part--The context has to be something you like, are interested in, or reflects something about you.

Here’s my example: The Green Climate Fund is $100 billion per year, so far only $10-11 billion have been pledged. Now the context—what does this mean exactly? Sounds big. But is it? How does it compare with two things I like to imbibe—beer and potato chips. If I can have both together, which I do very rarely because I cant justify such an indulgence, I am in heaven. So, I went digging—and found that in 2013, americans consumed $7 billion in potato chips and $83 billion in beer alone! Pretty much the Green Climate Fund!

I chose this number because I have a background in economics, and I’m interested in the climate finance and how it’s all going to unfold. You could choose anything else that you see about climate—surface temperature increase, etc. And put it in context of something you like/are interested in.

We will use these slides to refer to from time to time, to create a body of knowledge that puts numbers in context, context is often something left out in climate materials.
