STORYLINE:
Dozens of protesters gathered in Paris on Wednesday to highlight the number of Ukrainian athletes they say have been killed by Russian forces since the war broke out in February 2022.

“We are here today to support our athletes and to remember that unfortunately four hundred and eighty-seven athletes or coaches have been killed in the war," said Jean-Pierre Pasternak, one of the organisers of the event from the “Ukrainians in France” group.

Participants gathered on the Mirabeau Bridge in t-shirts bearing the names of Ukrainian athletes who have been killed since the Russian invasion.

"It’s important to come to show that we are here, Ukrainians are here," said protester Zoriana Nevmerzhytska.

"We don’t give up and we are not gonna give up and we gonna come as long as it takes,” she added.

For the Paris Games, the International Olympic Committee set specific criteria for Russian athletes to qualify, including whether they publicly supported Russia's war.

The war also has affected Ukraine’s Olympic participation for a team that was one of the sporting powerhouses that emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The country is being represented by its smallest delegation in the history of the Summer Games — 140 athletes in 26 sports.
