Tom Bower was born in Denver, Colorado, Jan 3, 1938, and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Tom's large filmography began in 1957 with a small role in John Cassavetes ground breaking independent feature, "Shadows." When he came on screen, you knew you were in for something special. Along with James Gammon, Tim Scott, Martin Kove, Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, and Holly Hunter, he was on the board of the prestigious Los Angeles theater, The M.E.T. In 1992, I was honored to host a benefit and fundraiser at the M.E.T. with Robert Duvall about LONESOME DOVE. We called it "An Intimate Evening with Robert Duvall."

"The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez" is a heartbreaking tale of racial inequality and a miscarriage of justice set in Texas in the early 1900s. What's amazing is that the beautifully crafted film is a true story. Edward James Olmos, giving what may be his finest performance, heads a remarkable cast of powerful actors including Bower, James Gammon, Tim Scott, Bruce McGill, Barry Corbin, Brion James, Alan Vint, Pepe Serna, William Sanderson, Jack Kehoe and Ned Beatty. Beautifully shot on stunning New Mexico locations by Reynaldo Villalobos ("Conagher") and directed by Robert M. Young, the film had been underground and unseen until a recent DVD and Blu-ray release.

This A WORD ON WESTERNS episode with Tom was recorded March 16, 2016, when Tom joined me at The Autry's Cafe. We are fortunate that Tom was able to attend and share his story about the making of "Gregorio Cortez." His loving wife, Ursula joined him that day and shared in the fun of listening to his memories. She passed away in August, 2023. They had been married since 1972. Tom died May 30, 2024 at the age of 86. We send our condolences to his family, friends and fans. Rest in Peace, Tom, and thank you for the decades of entertainment and your friendship.
