Описание к видео Recovering Skuldelev Ships: Viking Blockship Wall That Saved Denmark

Skuldelev Ships were deliberately sunk as blockships to seal the Peberrende Channel and protect Roskilde from raids. This documentary follows how those sacrificed Viking hulls vanished into anaerobic mud for nine centuries—then became one of the most ambitious ship recovery projects in Northern Europe. To defeat near-zero visibility in the fjord, engineers built a steel sheet-pile coffer dam, braced it against hydrostatic pressure, and pumped the site dry step by step so archaeologists could work above the wreck field.

But exposing the Skuldelev Ships created a deadly countdown: once waterlogged oak meets air, shrinkage and collapse can destroy the artifact. The team kept the timbers alive under constant sprinkler irrigation, removed thousands of ballast stones by careful bucket-brigade handling, and lifted fragments on rigid trays so the wood never carried its own weight. After recovery, the Skuldelev Ships entered long-term PEG conservation—polyethylene glycol replacing water molecule by molecule—turning fragile “wet cardboard” wood into stable composite artifacts.

Finally, the puzzle was reassembled: what looked like separate wrecks became one great longship, dated by dendrochronology to Irish timber sources, and the fleet’s legacy lives on at the Viking Ship Museum—plus full-scale experimental replicas that proved how fast these ships could sail.
