Dr Caleb Jarvis (1903-1980) was the fourth organist appointed to St George's Hall. His predecessors were W.T. Best, from 1855 to 1894, Albert Lister Peace from 1894 to 1912, Herbert Ellingford from 1913 to 1943. Then followed Noel Rawsthorne and the current holder of the title Ian Tracey, titulaire of Liverpool Cathedral.

These recordings were made by Caleb Jarvis in 1972. He was a pupil of Goss-Custard, the Liverpool cathedral organist, studied at Durham and Manchester Universities graduating as the youngest DMus in the country, also awarded FRCO diploma. Jarvis also served as organist at several Anglo-Catholic churches in Merseyside and as a teacher, accompanist, choir director and composer. His imposing Organ Sonata in E minor is recorded by Richard Lea in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (Priory label).
