How to Measure for new kitchen cabinet doors

If you are planning to replace kitchen cabinet doors, or reface your kitchen cabinets with unfinished cabinet doors, this video will explain how to determine the correct sizes for the new cabinet doors by measuring the opening sizes on your existing cabinets.

This video will concentrate on calculating the correct sizes for overlay cabinet doors, and our examples will focus on the most common 1/2 inch overlay. This method of calculating door sizes will work for Mitered cabinet doors and Traditional Cope and Stick cabinet doors, a well as square or arched cabinet doors.

Now let’s get started by measuring the actual opening in our sample face-frame.

Using a tape, we measure the width of our face-frame opening at 11 inches wide and 13 inches high.

For this opening a 1/2 inch overlay cabinet door would be 12 inches wide and 14 inches high.

The math is simple, just double the overlay amount and add it to the opening width and height. This method will be used for each “single door opening”.

Now let’s figure the door sizing for “Double Doors”, which are those openings where two doors cover the opening and meet, or butt, in the center.

Again measure the cabinet opening. The door height is figured the same as with single door openings, which is “overlay times 2” plus opening height.
The door width calculation is a little different for “double doors”.

We will use our sample 11 x 13 face-frame opening again for this calculation.
Because we are using double we divide the opening width by 2. Next we add the 1/2 inch overlay only to the hinge side and not to the Butting side.

With an opening width of 11 inches, dividing by 2 gives us a opening width of 11/2 or 5- 1/2 inches. Now we add the overlay amount to the hinge side and get a door width of 6- inches.

This door width will allow the double doors to meet in the center and the side-to-side hinge adjustment will allow a slight gap between the mounted doors…in regions with fairly stable relative humidity levels.

In areas where relative humidity is less stable, the doors will expand and contract slightly with the humidity changes, which will change the gap between the doors. It is good practice to allow for a slightly larger gap between the double doors in climates with less stable relative humidity.

In these climates it’s common practice to reduce the door width by an additional 1/16-inch. Using this precaution the door width formula would be “Opening width divided by 2, plus 1/2 inch, minus 1/16 inch”. This will give our sample double door a width of 5 1/2 +1/2-1/16, or 5 15/16 inches. This double door width will provide reliable performance in all climates and allow enough closed-spacing for the Butt Doors to close properly in all humidity conditions.
