Hi I'm Keaton with HealthyMarks Medicare. Today we're going to talk about SHARP hospitals in San Diego and how to access Sharp facilities and doctors while on Medicare.

First let me explain, Sharp has two networks of doctors - the premier and the performance networks.

The premier network is a select group of doctors and hospitals with Central San Diego in mind. Premier offers the most value with access to a smaller group of high quality doctors in the downtown San Diego area.

The performance network is a broad network of doctors and hospitals offering a greater choice in a larger geographical area. The performance network has the outskirts of San Diego county in mind.

With this knowledge in mind you'll know that Sharp is a great option for anyone in San Diego signing up for Medicare. With their robust downtown San Diego hospital group and there are large network of affiliates countywide, Medicare members are in good hands with Sharp.

If you enroll in a Supplement plan from any insurance carrier in San Diego, you will have access to all of Sharp healthcare. Supplement plans are more like PPOs with access to a large network of doctors. it is important to remember that the network of doctors and the plan design for Supplement plans are determined by Medicare. Not the insurance carriers. So these plan designs and networks of doctors will be the same no matter which insurance carrier you select.

There are a handful of great options to consider if you would like to join a Sharp network of doctors on an advantage plan. Sharp offers their Sharp direct advantage plan which is well priced and offers great benefits. However Medicare members are unable to leverage the benefits of a of using a broker when signing up for this plan.

Our team at HealthyMarks recommends a UnitedHealthcare or a Blue Shield advantage plan with access to Sharp. There are some slight differences between these plans that may sway your decision one way or another. For example some may select UHC because their gym membership perk renew active has access to the gym they love while Blue Shields silver sneakers does not.
