Two historic churches in the Yorkshire Wolds. All Saints, Londesborough and St. James, Nunburnholme. Both visited in the morning 20.06.2020.

Anglican churches across the UK are beginning a phased reopening as lockdown measures are gradually lifted following the outbreak of COVID-19. Many people who normally spend a lot of time in these historic buildings have not been able to get inside them since February/March 2020.

Shortly after I arrived at All Saints church in Londesborough, a man came by to wind up the church clock and invited me to have a look around inside. I hadn’t expected to find the church open or to bump in to anybody who may have a key and so I keenly accepted the kind offer, as not only was this the first time I’d stepped foot inside a church in 4 months, but the first time I’d been inside this specific church in 4 years. It was a tremendous pleasure to be able to look around after such a long time and to see – amongst other things - monuments to members of the Clifford family and those of the Earls of Burlington.

Nunburnhome is a small, quiet village closer to Burnby and Pocklington. Earthworks of a small Benedictine nunnery can still be identified to the north of the village in private land surrounded by the wooded foothills of the Yorkshire Wolds. At the opposite edge of the village, the medieval church of St. James' with its handsome early 20th century tower is having on-going maintenance and repair work.
