For Season 1, Episode 2, of Precious Perspectives.

We had an unexpected guest rider, Aaron, and his puppy Pippi, join us for a well needed training opportunity.

It's not as easy as deciding to take your dog on a bike ride.There is lots of training that must happen before, and then during the first few rides.

Lots of dog handlers are oblivious to their pets behaviors. But when riding at high speeds, it's a safety issue if your dog has not been properly trained in trail etiquette. And part of that training is making sure your dog can cross paths with, and run along side, another dog on the trail.

Today, thanks to our new friends Aaron and Pippi. We worked on how our dogs behaved when around other dogs running "with" them on the trail. But next time, we can work on passing our dogs without them stopping to say hey while we do.

But every time me and Precious hit the trail, we will be working on, her taking the proper spot when we stop. So she doesn't wreck people or get herself hit standing in the trail. Then eventually, we will work on her yielding the trail to passing riders without us having to stop, like I can do.

It takes a well disciplined and obedient dog to be a MTB trail dog. Capable of running at higher speeds and quick turns while staying fully focused on their handler and not interfering with other riders. It is definitely a sport for the self disciplined in pet attentiveness. Not your average dog owner.

So I do NOT suggest just anyone taking their dogs to the trails with their bikes. Most dogs should stick to pavement. But for those with an attentive owner that's put the work into creating a well mannered, obedient dog. It is quickly becoming my favorite form of PTSD recovery.

Precious is definitely not a herding dog with high energy and a light build. So, she's never going to be a fast dog. But, we're not doing this for speed. We're doing it to make the best of the years we have left together. And improving both of our health so we can have the most time possible.

I've lost everyone that was keeping me grounded in the living. except my pets.

This dwindling time I have left with my 4 old dogs; to say thank you for years of being my only companions during the worst times of my life.
Will be used as constructively as I can.
It's the least they deserve.
They are my everything's.

One day Pippi, Precious will be lean muscle instead of layered in fat. But between us, your always going to have to let her pretend she caught up on her own. Just sayin.
