Meet Gauze 🔥 One of Newcastle’s most exciting new bands and now proud Grand Finalists in the 2025 University of Newcastle Band Comp!

I caught up with Aiden, Sam, Joe and Jayden right after their blistering semi-final set, they were still buzzing (and a little breathless) from the energy they’d just unleashed. Their performance was bold, meticulously crafted, and completely alive, every transition, every beat, and even a hint of choreography had been carefully planned to pull the audience in.

What’s wild is that Gauze only formed at the start of this year. Since then, they’ve been rehearsing relentlessly, refining a sound that’s all their own, a mix of angular, experimental rock with grooves that still make you want to dance. Their songwriting sessions are all about experimentation: “expensive chords,” odd time signatures, and riffs built collectively until something clicks.

Musically, Gauze draw inspiration from artists like Black Country, New Road, Black Midi, Idles, and Talking Heads, bands unafraid to push boundaries and keep things weird. That experimental spirit runs through everything they do, blending post-punk intensity with indie textures and flashes of 90s alt-rock energy.

Their debut single “What You Want” — the first song they ever wrote together — is coming soon, followed by another single and a potential EP on the horizon 👀. You can also catch them live at upcoming Sydney shows in November.
