On a ~1880's J.B. Schall banjo I recently got and put back in playing order. (this one is NOT for sale).
Since it was never fitted with patent pegs, and apparently never had wire strings, this is likely the first time this instrument has been played in 100 years! I have it strung with minstrel-gauge Nylgut strings, and it is tuned cFCEG, a FIFTH below modern standard pitch. That is probably a step or two lower than it was tuned originally, but with a 30 inch scale it works OK down there.
