Final Fantasy Adventure for the Game Boy was the first game in the popular Secret of Mana franchise, also known as Seiken Densetsu in Japan or Mystic Quest in Europe. This seemingly little title underwent quite a surprising development reaching back to the very roots of Square and Nintendo's Famicom Disk System.

In this making of the Final Fantasy Adventure video I will explore the roots of this Gameboy game that go back well into the 80s, where Squaresoft came up with the idea for an epic Action RPG series for the Famicom Disk System. This proposed series was called Seiken Densetsu (The Legend of the Holy Sword) or simply Excalibur. The first game of this series was supposed to ship in April 1987 under the title The Emergence of Excalibur, but it was canned since it was too ambitious for its own good. Instead Square would end up releasing Final Fantasy later in 1987.

I will also talk about the most important developers involved in this game's creation as well as the challenges that they had to face during development. People like Ishii Kouichi, Ito Kenji or Kitase Yoshinori were prominent figures in Square and would leave their mark in video game history thanks to their contributions on important games or series like Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy Legend or Chrono Trigger.

Nowadays Final Fantasy Adventure or Mystic Quest is available on the Collection of Mana for the Nintendo Switch or as Adventures of Mana on the PS Vita or mobile phones.
