At a meeting held in Prague today, the heads of state and government of the European Union discussed easing high energy prices, the economic situation in the European Union, and further support for Ukraine. According to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, the main topics of the meeting were finding both urgent and long-term solutions for lowering energy prices in the European Union, supporting Ukraine, and ending the Russian aggression.

“Russia is using energy as a weapon against Europe and has significantly reduced gas supplies. To lower prices, we must also reduce consumption and try to slow down the recession,” said Prime Minister Kallas. “We need a long-term solution to eliminate our dependence on Russian gas and accelerate investments in renewable energy. However, to get the situation under control quickly, we also need temporary measures to reduce energy prices for consumers. By the October meeting of the European Council, we expect concrete proposals from the European Commission to ease prices and ensure our security of supply,” the prime minister said.

“Ukraine has shown that they can free the occupied territories. We need to continue and increase our military and economic support so that Ukraine could progress on the battlefield and free its territories from Russian occupation. My message to my colleagues was that until the war is over, everyone has to do more to help Ukraine,” said Kallas.

“We have prepared a new support package for Ukraine. We will discuss it at a cabinet meeting next week. I asked the Ukrainian prime minister yesterday about their most critical needs. We wish to support Ukraine with the most practical things that they have requested from us, such as ammunition and winter clothing and equipment for soldiers,” the prime minister said.
