Paws up on a Platform Exercise

Paws Up is an essential exercise to learn with proper form as it's the foundation to building on progressions like squats and many more. It's a very easy exercise to teach. A pedestal or platform is a stable piece of equipment.

First line them up center with whatever equipment you're using, then walk in front of them so they are in line with you. Ideally you want to try and get them to hold this for 10 to 60 seconds and as they get better at holding their stay that's when you can start checking their form.

Check that their shoulders are in line with their paws and that their back feet are in line with the hip area and that their back legs aren't open up to wide. From there you can make it more challenging by walking back and forth, full circle or behind them and that will shift their weight working on their balance because more than likely they will want to look where you're going.

The taller your piece of equipment the more challenging it is going to be, remember height = might .

This a great exercise to work on their balance and hind-limb strength. You can do this while you're walking your dog by finding a curb or a log, you can use the bottom of step, a book, klimb, catoboard, whatever piece of equipment you have or can find.

It's a great exercise to do every day since it's very easy to incorporate into daily life and as dogs age they lose muscle mass from their back end.

When you're getting your dog off the piece of equipment you can either have them walk across it or just have them slowly step off.

If you're doing a back feet hold the easiest way to teach that is to have them walk forward and stop them when they're back feet reach. Always looking at form, that their front feet and back feet are stacked nicely. Also make sure you're not rewarding too high as that puts stress on their neck and upper back, so make sure you're rewarding them down low so they have a nice flat top line. Depending on what piece of equipment you're using and how high it is, and your dog, holding this position for too long or too high will cause them to sit. From here nice and slowly just walk them off.

Tip: Kneel down with your dog for a straight top-line and easier on your back.

Reminders:
-Line up Center
-Work on Stay
-Check Form
-Weight Shifting

Keep up the good work let us know if you try this exercise or on what piece of equipment you use it on and it's always good to switch it up as well so happy training! 🐾
