In this book chat I talk about the Bruce Pascoe's children's book 'Young Dark Emu.' This book is a revelation. At school I was taught that the traditional owners of Australia were nomadic, hunters and gatherers. Using examples from primary sources - diaries, illustrations, journals Pascoe explains why this history is incorrect and encourages the reader to explore Australian history for themselves.

I acknowledge that there is currently controversy around this book and I have been asked to provide evidence of how I cross-checked the information provided in Young Dark Emu. As the adult version had won a number of literary awards including the 2016 NSW Premier's Literary Award I based my purchase of this book on these endorsement. Further, the book had been requested by staff at my school. So, when it appeared in the Scholastic Book Club I ordered copies. I acknowledge that people question the validity of claims made by Pascoe. This includes Andrew Bolt and the writer's of the blog 'Dark emu exposed.' For now, as many of the author's of 'Dark Emu exposed' do not state their actual names (so I cannot cross-check their credentials) I continue to believe that Young Dark Emu belongs in my school's non-fiction section.
