Описание к видео How to Siifish: Traditional Knowledge from the Northwest Arctic

This film is for young people and anyone in the Northwest Arctic who is curious about how (and why) to siifish, and how to process the fish after catching. In this fun 11-minute video, Elders Unaliina (Chuck Schaeffer) and Aulvik (Sophie Foster) teach young teen Anaulaqtauq (Andrew Greene) all of the steps of preparing for fishing, catching and gutting, and then cutting and cooking siifish.

The idea for this film was generated by members of the Kobuk and Deering Tribal Councils, who shared that there aren't enough Elders and culture bearers to teach all of the subsistence skills that young people need to learn, and that video could help make more of these skills accessible to young people.

This film is a production of Alaskan Films & International Data Systems (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kijik Corporation, the Alaska Native village corporation for Nondalton), and was made possible through funding by the State of Alaska, Department of Health Physical Activity and Nutrition Unit through the Building Resilient and Inclusive Communities (BRIC) contract.

The BRIC project brought together people from across the Northwest Arctic -- from Tribes, businesses, non-profits, government agencies, the school district, and more, including multiple departments of Maniilaq Association -- to review data on the region, make decisions about where to focus, and to put effort into projects to improve community health. This video is one of the projects the group decided on. (Other main areas of focus were childcare and breastfeeding.)
