Here's the deal: drywall next to bathtubs often gets water damage because, well, drywall is waterproof.

SO I decided to take matters into my own hands, literally, and do a little experiment with Schluter's KERDI-BAND.

Here's what I did,

Removed the section of drywall that got ruined, applied modified thinset to gap between the tub and adjacent drywall, and then embedded the Schluter KERDI-BAND in that thinset.

That dried overnight and a layer of setting type joint compound was applied over the thinset to smooth out the wall.

You might need a few layers of thinset or joint compound to get a nice and smooth wall. Sand down the drywall once it's dry.

Then apply a primer coat and paint with latex paint.

You can also apply a bead of 100% silicone caulk between the drywall and tub surround to ensure a tight seal.

Again, this is an EXPERIMENT and I'm not promising any crazy results but it's holding up for me and that's cool.

Let me know what you think down in the comments, I'm sure there are other ways to waterproof bathtub drywall but I wanted to give this a shot.
