Thesis
Spanish American wars of independence can be understood as a generator of a new international system. After centuries of colonial rule, between 1810 and 1815, several regions of Latin America were involved in civil wars to determine what form of government should success the royal authorities.
These independence movements where influenced by the French and North American revolutions. A clear example is Paraguay, as it was the first country to reach independence in 1811.
The instability in Spain due to the Napoleon invasion was exploited by South American countries, moved by nationalistic feelings, to claim their independence. Despite the efforts of Western’s powers to keep their colonies, in the end, Europe began to recognize the new reality in the Americas. In this process not only the foreign powers played a major role, indeed, the American insurgents where the main actor in the configuration of the new international scenario.
