(28 May 2019) Relatives of inmates in Brazil's Puraquequara Prison waited outside the main building on Tuesday, hoping for any information about their loved ones after two days of clashes left 55 inmates dead in four different facilities.
Brazilian security officials said they will transfer several inmates blamed for the killing spree in the Brazilian prisons to stricter federal facilities.
The move is aimed at releasing some of the pressure on prisons in the northern state of Amazonas.
Larisa Santos Batista's husband has been an inmate in Puraquequara Prison in Manaus for one month.
"We are anguished, desperate here outside (the prison), we don't know what to do because we are not allow to get close to the gate," she said, speaking from outside the prison.
She said the police had not informed families about anything.
Ana Claudia Bonfim da Silva's husband had been inside the prison for five years, accused of a robbery.  
"I'm anguished because I'm a mother, and how are those mothers whose sons were killed? How sad are they? Those mothers are suffering," she said.
"It is not easy, because they are treated like animals inside (the prison) but they are humans not dogs."
Early in the morning a refrigerated container was parked outside the Forensic Institute with the bodies of some of the 40 killed on Monday, while some families already attended the funeral of their relatives.
Justice Minister Sergio Moro also decided Monday to send a federal task force to the troubled state to help reinforce security inside the prisons.
Previous riots in early 2017 in the north of Brazil lasted several weeks and left over 120 victims.
