करवा चौथ का व्रत भारतीय महिलाओं के लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण व्रतों में से एक है. इस दिन महिलाएं अखंड सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति और अपने पति की लंबी उम्र की कामना के लिए व्रत करती हैं. हालांकि सामाजिक मान्यताएं कहती हैं कि इस व्रत का चलन पंजाबी परंपराओं से लिया गया है. लेकिन इस व्रत से जुड़ी धार्मिक कथाएं कुछ और ही कहती हैं. कई कथाओं में तो करवा चौथ को करवा नाम की एक पतिव्रता स्त्री से जोड़कर देखा जाता है. कहा जाता है कि मगरमच्छ से अपने पति की जान बचाने और भगवान चित्रगुप्त से अपने पति के लिए लंबी आयु का वरदान प्राप्त करने के कारण से ही यह करवा चौथ नाम रखा जाता है.
