Santa Monica Police Issue Warnings for Trash Can and Shopping Cart Violations at Beach

The individual was briefly detained and handcuffed while officers checked for any outstanding warrants. Officers informed the man that removing materials from city-owned trash cans is a violation of Municipal Code § 5.08.300, which prohibits unauthorized removal of refuse from city containers. After issuing a warning for the violation, the man was released.

In a separate incident, officers stopped a homeless man pushing a shopping cart along the beach bike path. The individual was detained and informed that possession of a shopping cart, not returned to its rightful owner, constitutes a violation of California Penal Code 485 PC regarding misappropriated property. Officers conducted a warrant check, issued a warning for the offense, and subsequently released the man, ensuring the shopping cart was removed from the path.
