Today, flights are responsible for about 2% of global CO2 emissions, without taking into account the radiative impact of contrails and air pollution, which further accentuate the impact of flights on the environment. In industrial countries like Switzerland, however, air travel contributes nearly 20% to the anthropogenic effects on climate.

Universities are among the largest contributors to these emissions through their many international relations and exchanges. Business mobility has often been identified as the main source of CO2 emissions from higher education institutions. The urgency of climate change makes it necessary for universities worldwide to coordinate their policies, adapt their means of communication and take urgent measures to reduce the impact of air travel.

In order to meet these coordination needs and to exchange best practices on the reduction of air travel, all Swiss Universities have decided to join their efforts by creating the first national network on this topic.

In these two sessions on air travel, EPFL, ETHZ, the University of Basel and the University of Neuchâtel present their respective policies, good practices, and the results of their common work, before animating a workshop aimed at establishing a set of ISCN members’ joint recommendations for sustainable travel.
