(MARISSA RODRIGUEZ, 7TH GRADE STUDENT, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“I THINK ITS REALLY IMPORTANT. AND MR. CARTER WANTS SPECIFICALLY THE GIRLS IN OUR GRADE TO DO IT. AND I THINK IT REALLY OPENS OUR EYES TO THE SCIENCE WORLD AND WHAT WE CAN DO AND WHAT AMAZING THINGS COULD BE OUT THERE.”
(BENNIE CARTER, 7TH GRADE SCIENCE TEACHER, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“WE DECIDED TO DO THIS PROJECT, BECAUSE WE WANTED TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO GET MORE GIRLS INTRESTED IN SCIENCE. THROUGH THE YEARS WE JUST HAVEN’T SEEN THAT. THIS OUR EFFORT TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN”
THE DATA COLLECTED FROM THE LAUNCH WILL BE USED DURING THE METEROLOGY UNIT NEXT YEAR.
(BENNIE CARTER, 7TH GRADE SCIENCE TEACHER, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“THE DATA IS GOING TO INCLUDE STUFF LIKE: TEPERATURE, ALTITUDE, SPEED, DIRECTION, BATTERY VOLTAG, AMONG OTHER TYPES OF TELEMETRY. THE 8TH GRAD TEACHER, MR. HANES IS GOING TO USE THAT NEXT YEAR WITH SAME GROUP OF GIRLS TO STUDY WEATHER AND THE ATMOSPHERE.”
(JENNIFER RAMOS, 7TH GRADE STUDENT, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“WE SAW SOME YOUTUBE VIDEOS ABOUT HOW OTHER PEOPLE WERE DOING THIS, AND WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A NICE PROJECT TO DO. AND WE WENT TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER CENTER HERE IN MIDLAND AND WE SAW HOW THEY DID IT TOO.”
THIS PROJECT WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUG A GRANT FROM THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION TITLED “HIGH ALTITUDE SCIENCE” IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,827.00 THAT WAS AWARDED TO BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN THE SPRING OF 2017.
(BENNIE CARTER, 7TH GRADE SCIENCE TEACHER, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS AGAIN NEXT YEAR AND EXTEND THE PROGRAM INTO VISITS TO THE MCDONALDS OBSERVATORY, TO THE PLANETARIUM IN MIDLAND, MAYBE TO THE SCIENCE SPECTRUM IN LUBBOCK, BECAUSE AS INTEREST GROWS WE NEED MORE VENUES TO INTRODUCE THE GIRLS TO.”
PREPERATIONS FOR THE BALLOON LAUNCH TOOK SEVERAL MONTHS. AND A WEEK LONG FINAL SYSTEMS CHECK BEFORE LAUNCH.
(PAIGE BYFORD, 7TH GRADE STUDENT, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“IT TOOK ALL OF US THAT ARE HERE. WE HAD A LOT OF GIRLS HELPING OUT, AND IT TOOK THE TEAM TO GET EVERYTHING READY.”
“WE’VE BEEN WORKING ON THIS FOR MONTHS AND HE’S BEEN GETTING US READY IN CLASS.”
(ZAIRAH GUILLEN, 7TH GRADE STUDENT, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“WELL, ONE WE HAD TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT HAVING ENOUGH HELIUM SO THAT IT WOULD LIFT EVERYTHING OFF AND START HEADING TO THE STRATOSPEHER.”
AS A MEMORIUM, BASA STUDENTS INSERTED PHOTOS OF VICTIMS FROM THE SCHOOL SHOOTING IN FLORIDA. AS THE WEATHER BALLOON REACHES THE EDGE OF SPACE THE BALLOON WITH EXPAND AND POP AND THOSE PHOTOS WILL BE LOCKED IN THE STRATOSPHERE.
(FIONA MILES, 7TH GRADE STUDENT, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
“THE PICTURES WE PUT INTO THE BALLOON. IT’S A SYMBOL OF REMEMBERANCE AND RESPECT FOR THE KIDS THAT DIED IN THAT SHOOTING, BECAUSE THEY WERE A COUPLE OF YEARS OLDER THAN US.”
(EVEANNA ARREDONDO, 7TH GRADE STUDENT, BOWIE MIDDLE SCHOOL)
EACH OF THE GIRLS OF THE BOWIE AERONAUTIC AND SPACE ACADEMY CAME AWAY FROM THE PROJECT WITH A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
“THERE ARE MORE COMPLEX STEPS INTO JUST SENDING A BALLOON FULL OF HELIUM INTO THE SKY LIKE: YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO HAVE CAMERAS A GPS, MAKE SURE NOBODY STEALS THE DEVICE YOU’RE WORKING ON, AND IF THEY DO, YOU NEED TO FIND A WAY TO GET THAT DEVICE BACK.”
