High school juniors can serve in the National Guard without missing school through something called the Split Training Option.

This video breaks down how it works and why it’s designed to fit the academic calendar.

In general, Split Option allows eligible 17-year-olds (with parent/guardian consent) to:

Attend Basic Training during summer break

Return home for their full senior year

Drill locally one weekend a month

Attend job training (AIT) after graduation (often the following summer)

The advantage is simple: students can graduate with their class while starting pay and time in service earlier.

It’s not a shortcut. It’s a head start — when it fits the student’s goals and timeline.
