The fire last summer still burns against the police, racism, and bigotry. Despite the attempts at co-optation from the Democratic Party and open racism from the Republican Party, youth and workers are still rising up. What lessons can we learn from the uprising last summer to move forward with abolishing the police, breaking with the Democrats, and bringing class struggle together?

Carmin Maffea is a revolutionary socialist from Elmont, New York. Frequently passing by the corner where Sean Bell was killed by NYPD, and living one county over to one where a black man was found hung just last year, they saw the multiple faces of oppression of black people growing up. Knowing life shouldn’t be and doesn’t have to be this way, Carmin has been interested in revolutionary politics since high school.

An anti-capitalist since 16, Carmin has had many experiences --- from the first BLM protests, to working as a union staffer where they developed strong criticisms towards union bureaucracy. Carmin joined Left Voice due to the profound agreements they had with the politics. Currently in Argentina to learn from the comrades of Left Voice’s sister organization, Carmin feels there’s a lot to learn, but finally feels like they have found a political home.
