Are you a healthcare provider experiencing burnout?? Of course you are! Healthcare facilities are setting us up for burnout and offering no logical solutions.
I'm a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, previously a psych RN for 12 years. I have 3 children (12, 8, and 3), I'm totally overwhelmed with work and being a mother.
I've worked by ass off to get to this point in my career. I've worked as a secretary in medical records and went to school in the evenings. I gave birth to my son during winter break of nursing school, due to stress and financial strain the option of retaking the course was not an option. I returned to clinical 2 weeks after giving birth...... that's how dedicated I was to finishing school and having a career for myself but more importantly by children!
I've worked day, evening, and night shifts (whatever it took). I worked 12 hr weekend shifts so I could get my kids to and from school ( bc healthcare hours have no consideration for working mothers).
I've worked on locked units with hostile, aggressive, and psychotic patients ( with no security present). At 8 months pregnant I ran away from a psychotic patient and locked myself the med room, security showed up 8 minutes later.
I've had a patient throw a computer monitor at my head, I wrestled a patient and a Christmas tree ( don't ask me why an inpatient psych unit had a Christmas tree, totally unsafe). I've run down the halls of locked inpatient units and ER units with complete fear because I had dangerous clients chasing me.
At the age of 39 I'm realizing no one is looking out for us! I'm dedicated to finding solutions and continuing my work as a nurse practitioner because I truly enjoy my job.
