The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Vento (from 1992) or Volkswagen Bora (from 1999).
First generation (1974-1982): MK1 Golf was launched in 1974 and MK1 GTI in 1976.

Second generation (1983 to 1990): MK2 Golf was launched in 1983 and MK2 GTI in 1985.

Third generation ( 1991 to 1996): MK3 Golf was launched in 1991 and MK3 GTI in 1993.

Fourth generation ( 1997 to 2002): MK4 Golf was launched in 1997 and MK4 GTI as high performance model. MK4.5 Citi Golf was revised version of MK4 Golf.

Fifth generation (Mk5) (2003 to 2007). MK5 Golf was launched in 2003 as MK5 TSI, MK5 TDI, MK5TGI and high performance model was named as Golf R 32 and MK5 GTI, MK5 GT.

Sixth generation (2008 to 2011): MK6 Golf was launched in 2008 as MK6 TSI, MK6 TDI, MK6 TGI and high performance model was named as and MK6 GTI, MK6 GT.The 35th anniversary was celebrated with the GTI Edition 35.

Seventh generation (2012 to 2018): MK7 was launched in 2012 as MK7 TSI, MK7 TDI, MK7 TGI and high performance model was named as MK7 GTI, MK7 Clubsport, MK7 Clubsport S edition, MK7 GTD, MK& GTE and special version volkswagen Golf R was introduced.

Eighth generation (2019 to 2023): The Mk8 Golf was revealed on 24 October 2019 in Wolfsburg. Powertrain options now have three eTSI mild-hybrid and two eHybrid plug-in hybrid engines. It was also available as MK8 TSI, MK8 TDI, MK8 TGI.The MK8 Gti is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine (TSI) producing 245 PS .Other high performance model include MK8 GTE, MK8 GTD, MK8 Clubsport and special version all-wheel drive Volkswagen Golf R was revised in 2019.
