Cohousing communities are neighborhoods of single-family residences that are intentionally designed for interactions and share common spaces ranging from meal halls and playgrounds to garages and gardens. Communities are typically designed with pedestrian-only pathways connecting homes.

Michigan hosts five cohousing communities with a sixth on the way.

Residents at communities in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids spoke with MLive about the appeal of their unique neighborhoods, saying shared meals, garden plots, tool sheds and common spaces allow them to feel more closely connected to their community.
