Hello friends, let's talk about this topic in this video.

We'll talk about what it is, how it happens, its causes, symptoms, complications, and how we can treat it. So let's get started.

Umbilical Hernia, also known as umbilical or naval hernia, occurs when there's a slight increase in the size of the hole in the navel, allowing the intestine or fat to protrude through it. This creates a bulge known as a hernia beneath our skin.

Beneath our skin, there's a layer of hard tissue called fascia, in which there's a hole. When we cough, strain, or perform heavy lifting, the intestine or fat from the abdomen pushes through this hole. When we rest or lie down, they move back into the abdomen. If you notice this, it's almost certain that it's a hernia because it's rarely seen in any other condition.

The cause of Umbilical Hernia can be traced back to the time when a baby is in the womb, receiving nutrition from the mother and oxygen through the blood, which is miraculous, as it's connected to the navel. Just before birth, this hole starts to close, but if it doesn't close properly, especially in premature babies, this condition can be observed. Later, as we grow older, hernias may become more noticeable, especially in cases where there was weakness in the area from childhood.

Risk factors for hernia include increased abdominal pressure due to reasons such as pregnancy, repeated pregnancies, fluid buildup in the abdomen, or prolonged coughing. Additionally, premature babies who have weakness in this area may also develop this condition. Obesity can also increase abdominal pressure, leading to hernias.

Complications of hernia can include discomfort, pain, and, in severe cases, intestinal obstruction, which can lead to repeated vomiting and severe pain. If not timely reduced, the intestine can get strangulated, leading to dirty water spreading throughout the abdomen, causing the patient to become seriously ill. Moreover, as time progresses, the size of the hernia can increase, necessitating larger operations than before, and the requirement for larger mesh, which was not needed initially.

Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the hernia. Newborn babies with hernias may often see them resolving on their own within the first two years. However, if the hernia persists beyond 2 to 5 years, surgical intervention may be required. The type of surgery depends on the size and location of the hernia. Mesh repairs are commonly used, especially in adults, to prevent the hernia from recurring.

After hernia surgery, it's important to take care of oneself. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activities, and activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as straining during urination or constipation, for the first one to three months post-surgery. Always follow the doctor's advice regarding the duration of care needed post-surgery.
