Steel Beam Design Calculations for Beginners - Structural Engineer

Example of a simple steel beam design done as a practicing engineering.

The reason I’m not checking the shear resistance is because I know that bending and deflection are the critical checks for this UDL condition. It is still worth checking if you are unsure or inexperienced.

It is really important to get good at hand writing calculations. If you are to sit your chartership exam with the iStructe, you must be proficient at writing calculations. So don’t become over reliant on computer software!

I am using Goodnotes 5 on my IPad Pro to write my calculations. I do this not only in this video but in real life for my work as I am trying to cut down on paper waste and embrace new technology.
