Around the next corner, though dark, we could clearly see the shaded image of quite a large dog next to a dumpster.

It was getting dark in the 5th Ward which means outsiders must move with caution through the neighborhood.

Alicia of Forgotten Dogs Of The Fifth Ward Project, out of respect for resident’s wishes, won’t stop and put food on their lawns for the loose dogs while they are present. She wants to preserve her privilege of feeding dogs in their neighborhood. So we did bypass a handful of loose dogs.

The headlights revealed what appeared to be a German Shepherd; a very skinny, emaciated even, Shepherd with an awful case of mange.

This was a dog in peril. He was not going to last much longer in the streets had he been left. This was a situation where though there was no space for him, Kelle couldn’t leave him; he needed rescue or he would die very soon.

Kelle quickly figured out where she would put him at her house, and began networking for this dog’s future. Kelle named this very lucky dog Jonah.

Alicia immediately posted a photo of Jonah on Facebook and began looking for a Shepherd rescue that might be able to take on this dog that needed so much help. He first needed medical help.

Kelle would keep him as a medical foster for a few weeks in order to get him out of danger. He needed treatment for his mange, and even trickier, she needed to very slowly feed Jonah so he can bulk up. He was skin and bones.

Once Jonah was in the car with Kelle, he was a peaceful dog; he knew he was safe, and didn’t have to forage for food; he didn’t have to be on guard against people and other animals who meant him harm.

It never ceases to amaze me the many times I’ve seen this happen with a stray dog that has been rescued. This dog had obviously experienced a difficult life in the streets. Because of this I could absolutely understand if he were anxious, angry, or mean, but he was not – he was a lover!

Jonah is in Kelle’s care right now, and after 3 weeks of medical care and good nutrition will be transferred to Chip n Snip German Shepherd Rescue. There they will prepare Jonah for adoption to a wonderful forever family. To adopt any dog from Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward: http://forgottendogs.com/
