The Dhangars are a community of shepherds and pastoralists who live in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh:

Lifestyle
The Dhangars are known for their nomadic lifestyle, moving along specific routes to graze their animals. They practice both nomadic pastoral and semi-nomadic and agrarian lifestyles in rural areas.

Population
The Dhangar community is estimated to have a population of around 1 crore, which is about 9% of Maharashtra's total population.

Culture
The Dhangars have a rich cultural heritage, with distinct customs and traditions. They practice a variety of customs and rituals, including the worship of their ancestors and the tradition of singing songs.

Demands
The Dhangars are demanding "grazing corridors" to be allowed to graze their animals on traditional routes without being seen as illegal encroachers. They argue that their grazing practices benefit the land and do not harm the forests.

Status
The Dhangars are part of Maharashtra's Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) list. However, they do not have Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, which is accorded by the Central government.
