Ravenna: A Stunner Off The Beaten Path

Ravenna is a modest stunner often overlooked by tourists. It’s quiet charm exudes an exquisite vibe—both relaxing and appealing to sight.

The city is a home to eight UNESCO-recognized heritage sites.

This extraordinary place is a treasure trove of arts, culture, and history.

The awe-inspiring Byzantine mosaics that adorn its churches and monuments speak exceptional craftsmanship of artisans back in the day.

Ravenna was a beautiful surprise we discovered by chance.

What was meant to be a brief visit turned into an impressive exploration of one of Italy’s most underrated gems.

First Day:

It was a little past 7 PM when I started biking, without an idea what historical places in particular to look for.

We just hopped on our bikes for a random stroll, trying to catch a glimpse of Ravenna’s famed mosaic.

To our surprise, the place was more than just their famous mosaic.

Ravenna is so rich with beautiful structures that we have to take several stops for souvenir photos, only to find out the structures we took photos of were of historical significance—a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

So we just continued biking around, not knowing where to go. We stopped randomly at ancient structures that piqued our interest. It’s like a mini Florence in terms of its old structures and churches, but with the vibe of Venice.

Ravenna slays it like Florence and Venice combined—less the tourists, less the crowd. The cherry on top is the warmth of its people; they are welcoming, kind, and accommodating. Discovering the city via bike was a brilliant idea, making our quick visit worthwhile. Four hours in total on a bike was a feast of ancient wonders.

Ravenna had truly struck us by surprise that I consider coming back, as there were so many places left unseen, worthy to be explored.



So I guess I have made my impression about Ravenna loud and clear.

I have emphasized by repetition how this gem in hiding is certainly worth your time. Porto Corsini in Ravenna is one of Royal Caribbean’s ports of call, so if your cruise happens to dock by this port, don’t miss the chance to take a look at this absolute stunner. A day at least or two.
