Here’s the fishing 411 on understanding gear ratios in fishing reels:
The speed, or gear ratio, determines the number of times the spool will spin with a single turn of the handle. For example, a reel with a higher gear ratio such as 8.5:1 means that the spool will turn a total of 8.5 times each time the handle completes a full rotation.

Baitcasters come in variety of different speeds, so it’s extra important that you take your bait into consideration when you’re comparing high vs. low speeds. Low speed gear ratios work best when you’re fishing with a fast-moving lure such as a lipless crankbait. The slower speed allows the angler to reel in the line at a nice, comfortable pace without causing the lure to turn on its side or come up too quick. High speed gear ratios work best when you’re pitching with slower-moving lures such as worms. The higher gear ratio allows you to pick up slack more quickly and be ready to set the hook when you feel a bite.
