Best Parks & Waterfalls in Ottawa | Stanley Park, Rideau Falls & New Edinburgh

Recently, I had the opportunity to explore the beautiful New Edinburgh neighborhood in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This affluent neighborhood, located to the northeast of the downtown core, is home to the Governor General's large residence and grounds, Rideau Hall, as well as 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the Prime Minister of Canada.

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Stanley Park, which is situated in the heart of the New Edinburgh neighborhood. This park offers riverside trails and plenty of off-leash space for dogs, making it a perfect spot for a picnic or bike ride.

What I found particularly fascinating about this park was the Minto Bridge, is a series of truss bridges that span across the Rideau River, connecting the park area to Green Island and then on to the lower town area of downtown Ottawa. This unique heritage bridge was constructed with riveted connectors, making it one of the first bridges in Canada of its type. It is made up of three spans that are continuously connected and painted white. The bridges were built between 1900 and 1902 and were named after the eighth Governor General of Canada, the Earl of Minto.

Another must-see attraction in the area is Rideau Falls Park, which features dramatic cascades at the confluence of the Ottawa and Rideau rivers. The twin falls mark the spot where the Rideau River flows into the Ottawa River. The 2.89-hectare park is the site of several commemorations, including the Mackenzie-Papineau Monument, the Commonwealth Air Force Memorial, and the National Artillery Monument.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to New Edinburgh and exploring the beautiful Stanley Park and Minto Bridge. I would highly recommend visiting this neighborhood if you're ever in Ottawa. Nearby attractions include Major's Hill Park, Rideau Canal National Historic Site, ByWard Market, Rockcliffe Park, and Rideau Hall. So, don't forget to add it to your bucket list!
