In this Paper Mobile Tutorial I am going to show you the basic steps involved to create a paper mobile. This tutorial does not show you how to decorate your hoop, attach the ribbon to your hoop and hang your decorations.

You will need the following materials to create a similar paper mobile: Lots of colored card stock, pencil, scissors, ruler, glue, markers for decorating, nylon cord, hoop for hanging - like a wooden embroidery hoop, decorative ribbon for hanging the hoop, optional: fabric to wrap around the hoop, beads for seperating your paper objects.

Be prepared to spend quite some time tracing and cutting your shapes. If you don't have one of those electronic paper cutting machines, then you will spend a good few hours on just cutting your shapes. For every 3d shape you need at least 4 single paper pieces. If you don't care for 3d shapes, then you can cut down of only 2 pieces per shape. Also be aware that you need symmetric objects to create 3d shapes. As you see in my video, the elephant can only be made into a 2d object.

Be aware that they are home made and you might need to tweak on them to get your perfect result.

To spice up my paper objects I trace some of them (clouds, hot air balloon, elephant and bird) with a dashed line.

In my paper mobile tutorial I will show you how to attach your 2d/3d shapes to your nylon cord with just gluing it. You can also add a bead before and after your shape. I experimented with that as well (not shown) - but it does not look as nice. The cord will not be straight with that method, plus it is not easy to put your beads in place. You probably could use hot glue if you want to explore that option.

From my experience, you could do the whole attaching of your shapes to your nylon cord while the hoop is already hanging from the ceiling. Then you can see better how much space you need to leave between each object (and how long you want your chains to be...). This way would probably take a little longer and be not as easy as sitting at your desk, but the end results would be better.
