John Adams was a Founding Father of the United States, a key advocate for American independence, and the second President of the United States (1797–1801). Born in 1735 in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, Adams was a Harvard-educated lawyer known for his sharp intellect and principled stand on justice. He gained early prominence by defending British soldiers after the Boston Massacre in 1770, demonstrating his commitment to the rule of law despite his opposition to British policies.

As a leading voice in the Continental Congress, Adams played a critical role in the push for independence, working closely with Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence and served as a diplomat in Europe during the Revolutionary War, securing vital support from France and negotiating the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the war. As President, Adams faced challenges including conflicts with France, domestic political divisions, and the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts. Despite these struggles, he maintained peace with France and strengthened the young nation’s government institutions. Adams’ correspondence with his wife, Abigail Adams, offers invaluable insights into the era. His legacy, often overshadowed by contemporaries like Washington and Jefferson, has grown in recognition as historians highlight his contributions to American governance and diplomacy.
